Teacher – Very Good Children! Now we are going to study figures of speech. Do you know what is Alliteration and Onomatopoeia? Poets make the poem musical and different from prose by using many poetic devices. One of them is using words that begin with the same sound in the same line e.g. 1) Beautiful birds 2) sad song 3) city site 4) stepping stone 5) No one knows This device is called Alliteration and belongs to set of similar devices, named Figures of speech. It adds to the beauty of a poem. Now children, tell me some pairs of words that begin with the same sound.Student – black beauty, criss – cross, dawn dusk, five fingers, good girl, happy home Teacher – Very good. Now try to find some lines from the poem that contain the figure of speech – Alliteration Students: 1) And cows and carts can cross it with ease 2) No sign of slime, the sands shine bright 3) At dusk and down once their bath is done.Teacher – Well done children! Now, I will explain you what is Onomatopoeia. Poets also make use of words that resemble a sound e.g. bang, swish, beep, roar, tweet etc. Such words are called Onomatopoetic words. If they occur in some line of a poem the figure of speech in that line is called Onomatopoeia. Now try to find some lines from the poem that contains this figure of speech. Students 1) chirping mynahs through that site. 2) The jackal’s howl is heard there at night. 3) Splashing with their gamchhas as they wade. 4) The air ride with babbling sounds
