Teacher:- Students let’s discuss about the poem. Children tell me. Does the word walk refer only to the act of walking? What does the poet actually mean to say? Students:- The word walk in the poem not only refers to the act of walking but it also involves every act the child sees his father is doing, which makes him responsible and caring He also wants to be a responsible and hardworking person like his father. Teacher:- Good ! What do the ‘footsteps’ of the father refer to? Students:- The ‘footsteps’ of the father refers to the work that he does for his family. My grandfather was a lawyer. My uncle is also a lawyer. People say that he followed the footsteps of his father. Teacher: - Excellent! I will give you one more example. Mr.Baba Amte worked for the betterment of Adivasis and people who were suffering from leprosy. His son Vikas Amte is working for the same cause. People say that he is following the footsteps of his father. The child in the poem wishes to be like his father when he grows up, so he tells his father to guide him properly on the path he has chosen for his life. He expects that his father should slow down. i.e. he should spend more time with the child. It will help the child to have clear ideas about the chosen path. He wants the fathers footprints to be very clear, so that he will have no doubt about what to do or where to go.
